Westbound Amtrak train at Long Island City, New York: Well, the first thing I should acknowledge is that the quality of this series of pictures is less than adequate, thanks to some really crappy weather. In spite of that, though, I present these as an example of some the highest-density railroading you're likely to find anywhere in North America. Here is an Amtrak train about to enter the tunnel under the East River and into Manhattan's Penn Station. Based on the time of day, I'm guessing this is train 85, which will travel from New York to Richmond, Virginia. We're standing on the Long Island Rail Road's Hunterspoint Avenue station platform, and over the next half hour, we'll see no fewer than six trains on this track.
