The abandoned Michigan Central ice house still stands, sans roof, in Niles, Michigan. It became surplus when the New York Central abruptly moved most of its through freight traffic off the Michigan Central and onto the New York Central mainline across northern Indiana in 1959. Prior to then, the Central ran high-priority trains of perishables on this line, which required re-icing at strategic locations, such as Niles.
The southern end of the building has been repurposed, and sports a fairly new roof.
In the distance, a few gondolas sit adjacent to Amtrak's 110 MPH Michigan Line.
